Cheers to Brooklyn's New Black-Owned Champagne Bar

This week’s Brooklyn Business Owners Spotlight Series features Stuyvesant Champagne, a line of champagne inspired by the owner’s love for bubbly and her hometown, Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Marvina Robinson’s love affair with champagne began when she was a student at Norfolk State University. She and her friends would often pool their funds to purchase a bottle of Moet & Chandon, "White Star." They would have a traditional toast, cheers one another and sip from their plastic cups with confidence. Although this nostalgic bottle has since been discontinued, it birthed a love for champagne in Marvina that remains to this day.

Marvina had an entrepreneurial spirit for years, pursuing various endeavors from a sneaker art business, to a cycling studio, to a café. When she was unable to expand the beverage selections to include beer, wine and champagne, she decided it was the perfect time to open a premium champagne bar in Brooklyn.

As one of the few African American women who owns a champagne brand, Marvina desired to create a private house label. By working with a French vineyard she was able to create Stuyvesant Champagne; grown, harvested and bottled in France. The first official tasting in the United States was hosted by Suite 607 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. After receiving quality feedback from the invited guests, she was able to confirm the two selections that would become the primary offering of Stuyvesant Champagne: a Brut Rosé and a Grande Reserve.

Along with Stuyvesant Champagne, Marvina is the owner and sole proprietor of Champagne & Thangs, a cocktail catering business that works with vendors and venues to host pop-up bars in New York City. With a zest for life and traveling, she aims to bring a taste of home, spice and culture to the champagne community.
