This Summer Camp is Every Harry Potter Fan's Dream
Updated: Dec 10, 2019
This week’s Brooklyn Business Owners Spotlight Series features Camp Hogwarts Brooklyn, a Harry Potter-themed children's summer camp. Rebecca Rice, co-owner of Camp Hogwarts, is already planning Summer 2020's camp. Our conversation with Rice follows:
About Camp Hogwarts
Camp Hogwarts Brooklyn is a summer adventure camp designed for Harry Potter-lovers, by Harry Potter-lovers! We are based in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn. This year's camp is being offered July 20-24 and if available for two age groups: Ages 7-9 and Ages 1-13.
What Camp Hogwarts brings to Brooklyn
There are so many fans of the Harry Potter series who live here in Brooklyn and around the world. We wanted to offer a specialized summer adventure camp experience for kids where they could immerse themselves in the incredible world of the books. While in camp our wizards-in-training are able to participate in Potions class, learn Spells and Charms, play Quidditch, and do tons of other things that Harry and his buddies did at Hogwarts. In addition, we try to foster a creative spirit and a sense of friendship while our campers are with us - the kids work together to invent, explore, collaborate, and expand upon the experiences of their favorite characters.
Life before Camp Hogwarts
We have a background as classroom educators and have all been teaching performing arts for our entire careers. We run Camp Hogwarts out of our performing arts studio, Park Slope Performing Arts, which we opened about seven years ago. At PSPA we offer dance, music, and theatre classes during the year and theatre camps over the summer. The camp started as just a themed-week of our PSPA summer camp series and over the years, has grown into a community, all its own, where campers return year after year to learn, create, and connect with other like-minded Potter fans.
Challenges of running a seasonal small business
Over the years we have honed our business model to stay competitive in a very large market of summer camps. To do so, we have added things like Hogwarts birthday parties and field trips (for visiting school classes). This year, our studio expanded to a second, larger location - so this year we will be able to offer a more immersive experience for even more Hogwarts campers. We are working on building our social media presence. Our performing arts studio is a great platform for getting the word out about our camps and other programs.
What‘s in store for Camp Hogwarts
We want to continue to expand the camp - this year we are offering a new age group for older campers up to age 13. We have a few more things in the works which will allow us to expand our Hogwarts family.
We are a proud women and family-owned business (two daughters and a mother) and we started this business in the same neighborhood where our family has been for three generations, now. We love to see so many amazing small businesses popping up around Brooklyn and want to continue to support small business growth!
