Stay-At-Home Mom Looks to Grow Balloon Business
This week’s Brooklyn Business Owners Spotlight Series features Christina Cartagena, a stay-at-home mom who recently launched a balloon business, Brooklyn Balloon Girls.
As photo booths have become a staple at most events and parties, so has the design process for the booth leading up to the event. A key design element for these staged photo areas: Balloons. And lots of them.
Balloon wall displays “have been taking off on the West Coast,” Christina Cartagena, owner of Brooklyn Balloon Girls, tells BBO. “Ideally I would like to find a way to get ahead of the curve.”
Cartagena, a stay-at-home mom of two girls, Luna and Lucy, previously worked in banking and at a law firm before jumping into the balloon world. Cartagena, along with her husband and daughters, moved to Park Slope three years ago after selling their New Jersey farm house.
It was at a friend’s baby shower in August that spawned Cartagena’s idea to launch a balloon business.
“I saw a balloon garland and said, ‘I can make that!’ So I went home and Amazon Primed an air pump and balloons and I did it,” Cartagena explains.
Thus, Brooklyn Balloon Girls was born. The company delivers and assembles all balloon creations for any size event – mostly servicing parties and showers – but Cartagena wants the business to blow up to another level.
“I really want to target more high end events, in time I’m sure it’ll happen. I’m hoping to break into the NYC wedding world.”
Cartagena’s husband, a graphic designer, recently created a logo for Brooklyn Balloon Girls to promote the company further.
“I’ve only used Instagram so far for growing the business… it’s gotten me quite a bit of jobs but I want to be bigger, much bigger,” Cartagena writes. “I have high hopes for what it could become. It makes me so happy to see how excited people of all ages get when they see the balloons arrive.”
